Title: Office Hours

Summary: Why she second-guesses herself, he'll never understand.
Word Count: 401

As the clock echoed out its third toll, her concentration broke. Realizing he’d only be in his office a short while longer, she slipped away with a feeble excuse and ascended the staircase leading to his floor.

She'd only just turned the corner when she saw him exiting his office, books clumsily stacked in his arms as he closed the door behind him. He paused in his steps when he saw her, distractedly offering, “Hello.”

"Oh, I'm sorry. This must not be a good time," she fumbled, growing self-conscious.

"No, no, it’s quite alright. I do have to leave in a few minutes, though," he said, reopening the office door. He entered, and purposefully pulled a chair to the front of his desk before seating himself in his own opposite. She tentatively sat down, mentally weighing his disinterest against her judgment in coming.

"I thought I might stop by for a visit. The past two classes I've been feeling rather lost-" she began, when he interrupted "What? You're doing very well! You did a fine job on your last examination."

"I did?"

"Oh, did I not return that to you yet? Here, I do believe I have it somewhere," he offered as he rummaged through a collection of scrolls. "Ah, here we are. Indeed, excellent marks."

She took the scroll from him and saw the near perfect score, reiterated underneath with "Well done!" in his handwriting.

"This.. can't be possible," she said, her mouth half open. "I- I- Did you mark these higher?"

"No, I can assure you it's quite right."

"I- Are you certain?"

"Yes, I'm certain. You're doing fine."

"I did this before with the last topic, didn't I?"

"Yes, you did," he said with a slight smile. "But then, I suppose it's better to be under-confident and have done well, than overconfident and have done poorly."

"Yes, I do suppose,” she agreed, her embarrassment now fueling her doubts, as though she'd unmasked her insecurities for him to see. She wondered if it wouldn't have been better not to come at all in the first place. "Well, I really ought to let you be going," she offered. "Thank you for allowing me your time when you had so little of it."

"Not at all," he said as she stood to leave.

As she exited the office with her soft good-bye, he wondered to himself about this girl.
